Newcomers
Defeat Incumbent
Cattano and Raab Victorious

The
Freeport School Board election was one nobody could call. Two time
incumbent Al Renken took one final shot at the brass ring and missed. The
Latino team of Piñeyro and Yndigoyen campaigned on a platform of
inclusion and were hoping to turn out the Latino vote. After hearing that
they had lost, they vowed not to give up the fight for a quality education
and equality for all the students of Freeport.
The winners were the ticket of Dr. Joe
Cattano, who was supported by many of Freeport's old guard and Michael
Raab, who apparently ran with the blessings of the city fathers.
NYS Supreme Court Justice Ira Raab, on
hand for the count, beamed after he learned that his son had won. Judge
Raab told FNYN, "Now, I’m going to have to make sure that he works
hard."
After he learned that he was victorious,
Dr. Joe Cattano walked over to School Board member Sunday Coward, who has
felt the frustration of being the lone dissenter on the Board for the last
year and said to her, "Don’t worry, I’m going to do the right
thing."
The final vote was as follows: Cattano -
1062; Raab - 890; Renken (incumbent) - 799; Piñeyro - 696; Yndigoyen -
456.
The school district budget and the
Freeport Memorial library budgets passed.
