This Monday, April
17th, Freeport High
School will be administrated for two hours by US Senator Charles Schumer.
Chris Hahn, Schumer's L.I. coordinator explained that the Senator will be
principal in two other districts and will conclude the day with a press
conference. Hahn explained that these visits are non political events.
"The Senator believes in the public schools and the value of a public
school education. He is coming to Freeport to go to the High School. This
is a non political event," Hahn said.
Unlike Freeport School Board President
Dante Grover, who never attended the public schools and removed his
children from them, Senator Schumer's children attend them. In an article
titled "City Education Suits Schumer Just Fine" published in the
April 3d NY Daily News, Schumer said, "I do think it motivates you to
do more for public education when you see the problems as a parent. It
helps you do a much better job as a legislator." Go

FreeportNYNews wishes the Senator well in
his new job as Principal for A Day. Like any executive beginning a new
job, there are some things the Senator should be aware of to make him more
knowledgeable in the task he is about to undertake, even if it is only for
only a couple of hours.
*******************************************
Dear Senator:
Stephanie Cieslik, the co-president of the
High School PTA, along with FNYN thinks you should know the following.
 | The Freeport school district ranks
fifty third out of fifty six school districts in Nassau county. The
school scores have been falling district wide for the past few years,
yet the Board of Education has given the Superintendent of School
merit pay increases and tenure to the Superintendent of Curriculum..
|
 | "Freeport has been identified as among
the top thirty-seven districts in NYS in extraordinary need, with a
large and growing portion of the student population at extremely high
risk. These conditions are becoming deterrents even to parents who
themselves were raised in Freeport and attended Freeport
schools." (From magnet school grant)
|
 | On their way to Albany for a
conference, members of the staff were nabbed by the police for
speeding. The Asst. Supt. of Business, Kishore Kuncham, saw nothing
wrong with using district funds, to pay for the speeding tickets. The
president of the Board, Albert Renken and the Superintendent, also saw
nothing wrong with this. The school district auditor reported to the
board that the state also found nothing wrong with this.
|
 | The Flashings, the school newspaper,
has been squashed by the Board and the Administration. The district
spokesperson, Assistant Supt. of Curriculum Tony Ciaglia, said that it
is because the students have not submitted any articles. As Principal,
you might want to call into your office student editor Adam Gaffney
and former Flashings advisor Ira Schildkraut for their side of the
story. It shouldn't take more than five minutes. After all, where
would we be without freedom of the press?
|
 | Freeport High School, as well as the
district, is suffering a mass exodus of quality teachers and
administrators. The High School has been particularly hard hit. As
principal, you might want to call in the APs for a ten minute
brainstorming session. What you learn might be helpful when you resume
your other job.
|
 | At a recent high school event,
"Apollo Amateur Night" in your high school, intermission was
marked by students smoking cigarettes and dope at the front door and
the school courtyard, with your predecessor, Principal Northover,
standing by and allowing this illegal activity to continue unchecked.
|
 | The Director of Athletics, Terry Haise,
is a member of the wrestling hall of fame and has spent his career in
the Freeport school district. He has such a great love for the sport
of wrestling and the students of this district he has volunteered to
coach your wrestling team for free. The Board and superintendent
squashed him.
|
 | A few closed door sessions in your
office, like the ones you must have in the Senate, with some students
and teachers might be very beneficial to the future of the students in
this district, as well as the district itself.
|
 | Finally, you are probably aware that in
low wealth districts psychological services are very important. As
principal of the high school, you should know that the lead
psychologist of the district has had his office moved into the
bathroom in the district's administration building by the
superintendent and the Board.
|
Dear Senator, FNYN and the co-president of the high
school PTA, Stephanie Cieslik wish you well in your tenure as principal of
Freeport High School.
